Your horsebox is a valuable piece of equipment. Just like you would with a new car, you need to get to know all the functions and features, so you can use it correctly and avoid any potential issues. Most horseboxes will have lockable doors, windows, ventilation, and a ramp. Each horsebox will be slightly different, so always check the user handbook.

Before every journey, you need to check your lights are working properly. Check your tyre pressures, and make sure you’ve fixed your vehicle registration number to the horsebox.

A horsebox will need some general maintenance to keep it in good condition, to prevent rot and rust which could cause a lot of damage.

TRANSPORTING HORSES

When you transport a horse with a horsebox or trailer you need to make sure you:

have the right driving licence for the weight of your vehicle or trailer
have an operator licence (if you need one)
are qualified to transport horses if you’re travelling for over 8 hours
do not overload your vehicle or trailer
carry out regular safety checks
have a valid MOT for your vehicle or trailer
follow rules on animal welfare

Driving licence rules

You need to make sure you have the correct driving licence category. This will depend on the size, type of vehicle you’re using, and when you passed your driving test.

You can check online to see what vehicles you can drive.

You should check if you need a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence if you’re driving a horsebox that has a maximum authorised mass (MAM) over 3,500kg.

WINTER MAINTENANCE

You may not use your horsebox or trailer as much over the winter, but avoid the temptation to park it and forget about it. Poor horsebox maintenance can cause a slew of problems come spring, as well as making winter journeys more difficult.

Make sure…

Coolant levels are topped up to avoid issues in a freeze

There’s at least a quarter of a tank of fuel, in case of an emergency

The tread depth of tyres is at least 3mm

Tyre pressures are adequate

All lights are clean and in good working order

The battery has been checked and serviced if needed, particularly if it’s more than five years old

The horse area has been fully cleaned out – leaving droppings or wet bedding in your horsebox will damage the floor

If your horsebox has a living area, there are a few special considerations you must take into account. You should…

Drain water and waste tanks, and water heaters

Empty the toilet tank

Turn gas bottles off

Charge the batteries

Clean out food cupboards and refrigerators to avoid attracting vermin

ROYAL THAI CAVALRY HORSE AMBULANCE TRAILER

In September 2023, we completed the manufacturing of a bespoke Horse Ambulance Trailer for the Royal Thai Cavalry. This innovative trailer lowers to ground level, making it easy for injured or recumbent horses to enter and exit. Designed for use at equestrian events, it accommodates horses with minor or major injuries and can also transport euthanized horses with dignity.

This project involved creating a fully customized solution from scratch. The trailer features bespoke hydraulics, its own air conditioning, an onboard generator, and a collapsible padded crush to secure the horse during its emergency journey. Our videos showcase the trailer in action, demonstrating the ease of loading and unloading in the lowered position. Once the horse is safely secured in the padded crush, the trailer can be lifted to ride height and set off on its potentially life-saving mission.
This is just one of many specialist coachbuilding projects we have successfully undertaken over the years. While our core business remains the manufacturing and repairing of horseboxes, we take great pride in our ability to deliver custom solutions for unique needs.

BREAKDOWN ADVICE- HORSEBOXES AND TRAILERS

Do you have breakdown cover in place? If so, is the information easy to find when you are travelling?

If you are unfortunate to breakdown, we suggest you carry a basic breakdown kit, for example:

A torch
emergency life hammer with seat belt cutter
hi viz jacket/tabard
powder fire extinguisher to British Standards
warning triangle,
jump cables and first aid kits for humans and your equids.

If you must travel during the winter months, be prepared, and carry. Emergency foil blanket, snow shovel and thermal gloves and an extra rug for each equid you carry.

Tips

If towing a trailer – check your vehicle insurance includes recovery of a trailer with horses on-board. Many standard policies do not include trailer or livestock recovery. Some providers have horse trailer assistance and equine recovery available as an add-on.
Have your breakdown policy easily available. Know who to call and your policy number for recovery.
Know what tyres are on your vehicle and the numbers on them.
Plan your route – know where safe stopping places are. Remember – go left if there is nowhere to pull in.
Check weather conditions before you travel as this may impact your vehicle and travelling conditions.
Check the route before you load to check for any incidents along your route.
Carry emergency contacts – next of kin and vets.
Download the ‘What3Words App’. It helps identify your location to a 3m-square location, enabling emergency services and recovery companies to find your exact location.
When on the motorway or major A road, do not unload your horse unless the police or agencies have granted permission.

BUYING A SECOND-HAND HORSEBOX

If you are looking for a lorry with living accommodation , then be honest with yourself about what is essential and what is nice to have. If you are planning to attend numerous stay away shows a year, then you may want living that includes a cooker, fridge, bathroom etc, as well as room to sleep, but remember that this all adds to the unladen weight of the lorry, which then reduces the amount of payload you have for your horses, kit and other essentials.

Remember to check whether the lorry is setup with hook up if you’re planning to attend stay away shows regularly. For lorries with gas, find out where the gas bottle is located and when the system was last checked by a qualified Gas Safe professional. If your lorry has gas, it is sensible to have a carbon monoxide alarm fitted.
